Flaneur

Psychogeography by Will Self

I‘ve begun with reading Will Self’s *Psychogeography*. I’m into the first chapter: Walking to New York. I have also here by my side Simon Ford’s *The Situationist International*, but that one can wait. My first major walking project would be in Hanoi, for a week next week. Why Hanoi? Should this aspiring flaneur know? I don’t, except that Hanoi‘s acceptable December temperatures were a factor in the decision-making.

I wish for the weather to be reasonably good for the start.

I should keep this activity simple. The walk is the thing, and the writing that follows it.

I should keep this activity simple. The walk is the thing, and the writing that follows it. I’ll take a few pictures, but only for documentary purposes. Since a large camera dangling from neck and shoulder impedes aimless wandering, at least for me, the phone camera should do. The iPhone XS camera is terrific anyway.

I’ll carry a notebook, of course, and a vegan’s protection in foreign lands. Time will tell if this plan will end with the beginning, or if it will lead me to some focused, sustained effort. I’m trying to be positive, and committed: I’ve registered a domain, and opened a Facebook page, and a Twitter account.

It’s about walking. Just walking. I should be all right.
